This blade is quite an amazing piece 
Allow me to list reasons why I love it.
First off I love the slight crescent curve on the blade, which reminds me of the Egyptian kopesh. While it's not as pronounced as it is on the Egyptian sword, it's still practical and it gives the blade a rather unique and gorgeous line.
Secondly, the relatively thick looking curved part of the blade, leads me to believe it's primarily a slashing weapon, possibly relatively front heavy, which is perfect for a slashing sword, as it allows to deliver a lot of force with relatively little effort.
On the other hand, the shape of the tip allows for thrusting, even if it's not the weapon's primary function, giving the user quite a bit of flexibility.
Despite being a very nice looking, ornate piece, the hilt remains fully functional, with the guard still able to catch glancing sword blows, while the grip looks quite comfortable for the user. I would imagine it would allow for a solid grip and a lot of control.
On a more Kao related note, the sword would allow him to use a lot of the techniques he picked up in sabre training, while giving him a chance to mix in a few thrusting techniques, which works great.
